With the 1st and 2nd elevens falling to defeat it was left to the third team to fly the Fortfield flag, something they did with distinction as they won handsomely at Abbotkserswell II.

After losing the toss openers Overthrow (13) and Sargent (4) fell early on before Greg Chaplin, making his first league appearance after returning from university 16 fours.

Griffiths struck a solid 45 and his dismissal brought Fowler to the crease and he eased his way to a second successive half century before he departed for a nine 4s and two 6s 62 as Sidmouth closed on 267-5 in their 45 overs.

The new ball duties were given to Gary Turner and Lee Clayden. Turner bowled Clayden bowled equally well returning figures of 1-26 from his nine overs.

Skipper Munday then introduced spin in the shape of Sargent and Seldon. Sargent bowled disciplined line and length, varying his pace well to finish with a splendid return of 4-31 from nine overs whilst Seldon’s nine overs saw him finish with 1-25.

Next up, off-spinner Munday and leg spinner Lines took over. Munday bowled five overs going for 15 runs, taking one wicket from a superb diving catch from Turner.

Lines also took an important wicket and bowled very well. Griffiths was then brought on and took the final wicket to leave the home side 183 all-out for 183 with Sidmouth banking a well-earned 20 points.

Tomorrow the side stage an East Devon derby when they host an Ottery St Mary side that sit third in the table, one place below the Fortfield team.
