Monday Stableford

Competitors in the Charles Stanley Monday Stableford had to battle horrible conditions for most of the day, writes John Rockey.

One of the early starters, John Game, overcame this adversity to post a score of 40 points early on to win the main event as well as the seniors’ section.

Just losing out on a countback was Neil Faulkner, celebrating his return to golf after a very busy week getting out of bed very early to supply the folk festival visitors with goodies from his bakery.

Faulkner’s return to the prize list was well timed just before he hosts the Upper Crust Trophy on Saturday.

In third place, with 39 points, was Tim Dunkley making a rare appearance on the course and coming in with a good score.

Last year’s Winter League winner, Carl Sheehan, who has not figured much in this year’s Friday League campaign, came back to sparkling form to win this week’s Friday Stableford at Sidmouth Golf Club, writes John Rockey.

Sheehan carded 41 points to take top spot easily, by four points, and with it reduced his handicap to 19.

Rather surprisingly, second place went to Mark Thomas with 37 points which was a remarkable score in view of his recent form, particularly when comparing it to his woeful effort the previous day when his inability to keep his ball in play cost his playing partner, ie yours truly, money!

Third was Nick Gingell whose 34 points just held off the rest of the field on a countback.

In the Friday League table Chris Roberts goes ahead again with 70 points, three in front of John Jones with George Barber and Marc Shoobridge a further point adrift.
