Sidbury United’s woeful run this season continued when they were beaten 2-0 at Byes Lane by Chard Town Reserves in a Fresha League game.

Typical of the way the United season is unravelling they had a ‘goal’ chalked off in controversial fashion in the game!

A minute before the break Josh Hannaford tucked the ball home from 15-yards and, after the usual celebrations, the ball was returned to the centre spot with the ‘goal’ being awarded by the referee. However, with the teams lined up to restart the referee assistant called the referee over and advised that there had been an off-side and the ‘goal’ was disallowed and a free-kick in the Chard area restarted the game!

Feeling extremely sorry for themselves, United were further frustrated when Chard scored a minute into the second half and they added one more to take the points.

United boss Jeremy Schofield said: “The ‘goal’ that wasn’t typifies the way our luck is running. It’s an old footballing adage that when you are struggling the ball never runs for you and when you are top and all is well, it does! Right now we are in a bad place, but we are still smiling and the thing is I know and, more importantly, my players know, that they are better than the current position we find ourselves in. All we can do is keep working hard and things will change in our favour.”

It may get worse before it gets better for the Byes Lane lads for they have a really tough fixture schedule ahead of them starting with this Saturday’s trip to second placed Topsham followed by a meeting with table-topping Honiton, then fifth placed Newtown before a swift return with Topsham.

That means their next four games are against top five teams!

Schofield says: “It’s interesting. I know our season so far has been underwhelming. However, we have the players to get us out of this hole and kick-start our season.”

The injury list lengthened this week with news that Danny Green will be out for a couple of weeks with cracked rib and Glen Salter misses the next month with a knee problem.

Schofield says: “No doubt it means we go to Topsham with a bare eleven. If that’s the case then we’ll simply roll our sleeves up and get on with our job”!”
