Sidbury United 3, Wellington 2 United emerged victorious from their top-of-the-table clash with a Wellington side unbeaten in seven starts before the game, thanks to a last minute winner.

The hosts began brightly and Dave Green saw a shot cannon off the cross bar in the early exchanges.

In the 25th minute the visitors took the lead in strange fashion! The ball was cleared from a corner only to fall back to the Wellington player who whipped in another cross which was meet by a Wellington head from five-yards out. United keeper Harvey saved it on the line, the ball dropped and three players all went for the ball; Harvey again appeared to save on the line and hold onto the ball, but the match official, from a position on the edge of the area, gave a goal, to the frustration of players and supporters!

The controversy clearly affected the home side and the Somerset outfit went on to control much of the remainder of the half.

The visitors spurned a glorious chance to go in with a two-goal advantage when a striker pulled his shot wide from six-yards after another good save by Harvey.

During the break United boss Jeremy Schofield tweaked his side’s shape and it paid dividends as they began the second period well and looked the more likely to score next. However, that was not to be the case as the visitors took a 2-0 lead when a through-ball saw the striker get to the ball fractionally before keeper Harvey to poke it under the glovesman. In the collision the unfortunate Harvey was injured. With no replacement keeper on the bench a brave Harvey continued, though without the ability to kick or run!

United boss Schofield rang the changes and introduced fresh legs from the bench.

This changed the game for, within five minutes of the switches Sam Seldon was brought down in the box and Adam Connett stepped up and it was saved only for the referee to order a re-take as some of the away players were in the penalty area!

Second time round Connett made no mistake box. The next home raid saw Green rattle the crossbar again, this time with a 30-yard rocket! With 20 minutes remaining Charlie Cox volleyed home from 10-yards to make it 2-2.

In the final minute of the match substitute Mark Hadley pulled the ball back to midfielder Tom Matthews who rifled the ball home to give United a dramatic winner and three priceless points.

Boss Schofield said: “Wow! I learnt so much about my players today and the desire to win. At two down with 30 minutes left and a very strange ref decision for their goal a lot of teams would have thrown the towel in, but not my lot! They refused to give up and got their just rewards. The only negative out of this game is the injury to our keeper who looked to have picked up a bad knee injury and could miss a big chunk of the season, but we are waiting on a scan till we know how long he is going to be out for.”
