Following the disappointment of losing out in both semi-finals of the Morrison Bell and Grandisson Cups, the Seagulls ended their season with a tremendous result at Sidmouth Town to lift the Matt Stiling Trophy. It was an excellent display from a side that has also just lost out on promotion to Senior 1. The game was a superb advert for football between two of the top local sides.Sidmouth scored first through Chris Duchenski, with a headed goal after Dave Green had supplied a superb cross which arrived at the far post. The Seagulls stayed focused and were rewarded with a goal from Matt Rasmussen 10 minutes before the break with a well taken strike. The second half saw Sidbury begin to take control and, with 15 minutes remaining, they scored through Russell Coombs who headed home a brilliantly placed free kick from Matt Channing. Coombs had raced back from Birmingham to play in the game, and missed the kick- off but came on for the injured Dan Churchill after 20 minutes. It was fitting that Sidbury's top scorers got the goals, bringing an end to a season that has seen them score 38 between them.Manager Mel Coombs said: "I'm delighted to be involved with this memorial match for Matty. The game was played in fantastic spirit as it has been for the last two occasions, and I am also pleased that we can give a good account of ourselves win or lose."All three goals were brilliantly taken and, with all the talent on display, the future looks good for both clubs."More good news for the club has been the return of youth football. From next season the club will be running under-12s. There has been a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes at Byes Lane as the club gets itself on a sound footing again. There has been a lot of interest on the youth side and it is hoped that more teams will follow, to continue the work that the present crop of former youth players are producing.l If any youngsters at the under-12 level are interested in joining, please contact the club's e-mail address sidburyutdafc@hotmail.com for more details.
