Matt Hewer played a leading role as Sidmouth 2nds stayed second in the top flight table after a 53-run win at Fortfield against Cornwood.

Hewer carried his bat for a magnificent innings of 132 to underpin a team score of 279-3.

With Hewer seemingly impossible for the visiting bowlers and it was the arrival at the wicket of Nick Mansfield that gave the innings real purpose as he slammed a quick-fire 69.

For the visitors to target 280 looked a long shot. However, what was clear in the pre-tea session was that another superb Fortfield track had been produced by the ground staff and Cornwood were always ‘in the contest’ up- until the final ten overs when the home side took control to ultimately seal victory and it was left to Joe Griffiths to end proceedings with the final visiting wicket taken in the 45th over.
