County competitions started this week with preliminary and first round matches in the Singles, Grater Pairs and Pairs being played at Budleigh and Madeira.

David Hughes and Ron Cook progressed to the second round Grater Pairs.

Ray Tallent and John Mason progressed to the second round of the Pairs.

In the Over 60s League the Sidmouth A squad collected another six points from their home meeting with Heavitree A. That points haul took the team into second place in Division One.

Meanwhile, the B and C squads endured another difficult week with the C squad scoring just one point at home.

The club travelled away to play Bradninch where they were edged out by four shots in a close encounter that saw the Mid Devon side win 75-71.

Sidmouth had two winning rinks, Susie Bonnel, Mike Bolland, Anita Mason and Mike Borst (26-11) and Mary Smith, Brian Lamb, Zena Johnson and John Mason (17-14).

On Friday Sidmouth entertained a mixed team from Seaton who were 75-64 winners with the home team losing on all four rinks.

The first major touring side of the year to visit Sidmouth was the Welsh outfit Abertillery.

Five mixed rinks were contested ion the most glorious of weather.

Regular visitors to Devon, Welsh teams arrive in good spirits and make the most of their day out with good bowling and a lot of vocal encouragement across the greens!

The final score was once again in favour of the visitors with only one Sidmouth team managing a draw for an overall score of 115-76.

On Monday evening Sidmouth played a County Top Club fixture at Seaton losing on three of the five rinks when the game was conceded in very near total darkness and a thunder storm!

At that stage the Fours and Pairs had managed to establish a lead.

However, Chas Coates’ 2 wood and Maurice Watsons’ 4 wood singles met strong opposition, but acquitted themselves well.

Maurice holding his opponent to score on six consecutive ends when 9-20 down and finish 16-21. Well done, Maurice.

The Triples had reached a losing position which they felt could not be retrieved and conceded their match.
