Neil Holland, was joined by Mark Seward and Steve Barber to claim The Famous Easterbrooks, sponsored by Easterbrook Eaton Limited. Using an amended version of the usual three-ball format whereby two scores were recorded on each hole (other than by the Shoobridge/Kerridge/Nelson team!) this was a difficult format. With Holland recording five birdies, Seward using his shots to improve six of his pars and Barber acting as the steady man to complete the team score on the majority of holes they recorded 85 points for a three point margin. The in-form Eric McMath joined Brian Rostron and Pat McCormack to take second place. Dave Hoare featured on his team's card on no less than 17 occasions and Peter Harrington and Don Cooper were grateful as they collected third.Kit Denning landed his tee shot 37cms from the hole at the fourth and Ross Collins smashed his drive 306 yards up the eighth fairway to collect the additional prizes. The club wishes to record thanks to the club president, Chris Timms, and his fellow directors at Easterbrook Eaton Limited for their continued support of this and other events. l Sidmouth Golf club hosted the 1st leg of the annual Picture Match against East Devon Golf Club. Both clubs fielded 16 players and played foursomes in the morning. Sidmouth fielded a few newcomers, Terry Jones, Jim Anderton and Nick Bater in the competition and the team got off to a good start, taking six out of the eight points available. All the afternoon singles are played off 'scratch' in handicap order with some great performances from Sidmouth's top players, but a fight back from East Devon's middle order reduced the advantage with the final result being 15 -9 to Sidmouth. Although this is a good lead, Sidmouth will have a hard task maintaining it on the return leg at East Devon. All the match results are available on the Sidmouth Golf Club website. The teams enjoyed a meal afterwards and the speeches from both captains harked back to the history of this competition which has been going on since 1932. The return match at East Devon is on Sunday, September 13, and Sidmouth are keen to do well as the Picture has been missing from the clubhouse wall for far too long!l The golf course is coming into prime condition for the main playing seasonthanks to the Greens Staff in the Monday Stableford. The scores reflected the much improved conditions and the fast improving Junior, Jack Hodge, led the way with 47 points. There is certain to be more to come and the Handicapping Committee will be keeping a close eye. Hugh Dorliac suffered an identity crisis and placed his card in the Juniors' box but it was recovered in time for him to be placed in second with 43. Kym White destroyed his locker before taking to the course and it is hoped that this does not become part of his preparation routine as he also amassed 43. Phil Beer must have thought that his 43 would figure higher than fourth, but not this time. There was good scoring in the Seniors category, as Ray Scott collected 40 points for top prize, two ahead of Bruce Harcourt.l The Seniors played their return match at Taunton & Pickeridge, having won at home against the same club two weeks earlier. The weather was hot and sunny and the course in excellent condition despite the heavy rain of the previous day. In these ideal conditions the team recorded an excellent 4-2 away win.The hot, sunny weather continued until Monday when the Seniors were away against Honiton. This fixture also followed a home win against the opponents earlier in the season and, either inspired by the exceptional weather, or the result of the Taunton & Pickeridge match, the team gained another away win by 41/2-21/2.
