Sidmouth and Ottery ladies’ third eleven edged out by table-topping Newton Abbot

Sidmouth and Ottery ladies’ third eleven were edged out by the odd goal in three when they travelled to Torbay to take on Newton Abbot, writes Suzanne Thorpe.
The 2-1 reversal was hard on the ladies, who put in a supreme effort and deserved to take something for their collective performance against the side sitting top of the table.
The team travelled in good spirit and that was reflected when the game got underway with some exceptional support play.
Both side created chances before Newton Abbot edged ahead after a period of sustained pressure.
That pressure continued, but SOHC were in no mood to concede again, especially with the impressive Brogan Algar between the posts!
It was no more than SOHC deserved when Evie Wilson got on the end of a slick move to apply a polished finish and send her side into the break on level terms.
In the second half Newton Abbot showed their strength, running hard at the visiting defence and it was a gradual build-up of pressure that led to what was to be the winning goal, rifled in after a cross from the lefty flank.
SOHC came back strongly, but despite going close a number of times they were unable to net the equaliser that their approach so deserved.
