It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Sidmouth B team, writes John Barnard.

On Saturday, the East Devon Trophy was played at Axe Cliff Golf Club. For the local B teams, this is the most prestigious event with a long history and involves the four local golf clubs, Sidmouth, Axe Cliff, Honiton and East Devon.

A huge cloud descended over the event this year though when East Devon, the club with the largest membership, said it could not field a team. Usually one of the most enjoyable events in the calendar, the players were all understandably disappointed and this obviously affected Sidmouth the most as they were third. The hosts, Axe Cliff won easily. After their unbeaten matchplay record all year, captain Colin Macklin was understandably a little disappointed that this didn’t extend into stoke play, but nothing keeps ‘Mack’ down for long.

The next day, Sidmouth B team hosted High Bullen, always one of the most social events of the year. Leading the way was captain Colin, supported by vice captain Peter (Horse) Northcott (perhaps being groomed for next year?). They had a great match winning two and one, with Peter showing that the cares of leadership didn’t affect his golf. Overall, Sidmouth won five matches and halving one. Lester and Rob Willmington had the largest win, five and three while Bob Welsman and Mike Dommett won four and three.

Captain Colin was a bit hoarse (?) after his speech the day before at Axe Cliff so the other horse took the lead, making the speeches and showing true leadership throughout the day.
