Sidmouth B triumph at Honiton

Saturday saw the first away fixture, at near neighbours Honiton for the Sidmouth B team.
Always a keenly contested fixture, especially for B Team captain Colin Macklin, as his son Spencer plays for the opposition, so bragging rights were up for grabs. It is a two-legged fixture with a cup for the winners and it essential to get something out of the away leg. It turned out to be a great day for Sidmouth as the team achieved a marvellous 3-3 result, which means they will be favourites when the home leg is played.
Leading the way was captain Mack, playing with Lee Wenham. Mack played really well and they won, 2 up. Lee birdied the first but only halved the hole as the other team had a shot.
It was close all the way round but the Sidmouth lads never looked like losing. Off second was club captain John Barnard playing with Laurie Quinn against Spencer Macklin.
After going two up through three holes, the golf deteriorated and Honiton played marginally less badly to win by 3 and 2. Next was club president Trevor Kerridge playing with his usual partner Guy Davis. They played really well and won, 1 up.
It looked even better for Sidmouth when vice-captain Ray Gunston and Bob Welsman came in winning by one. After going three up early on, the lead was gradually worn down but they just prevailed one up, Bob being very unlucky not to win the last hole as well as his long birdie putt just lipped out.
The final pairings of Roger Freer with Simon Knowles and Brian Leach and Channing both lost but it was a great result and an excellent day away.
