Sidmouth bowlers beaten on Denny Plate visit to Newquay

A trip to Cornwall was the highlight of the week for Sidmouth bolwers, despite the cold winds on the North Cornwall coast being a rude awakening from the relative warmth of South East Devon, writes David Fairclough.
It was a rare visit outside the county, to Newquay, to play in the ‘Denny Plate’ cup competition. The match comprised two rinks at home and two at Newquay, and called for an early start for our away rinks. Despite some individually promising performances, Sidmouth went down on all four rinks to a very strong club.
The ‘promise’ of a trip to St Austell (equally distant) in the next round was at least avoided, but we always prefer to win, and such a visit would have been no more daunting.
A pleasant diversion from the pressure of competing in Cup competitions, or for league points, was a visit from Honiton Club, who sent three rinks of men’s triples for a friendly fixture on Saturday, November 22.
Sidmouth won on two of the three rinks, and by an aggregate score of 59-43. The best Sidmouth rink was skipped by Mike Reader, supported by Ron Denning and Brian Barber, winning with a shot score of 29-9.
