I have been reliably informed by club chairman Len Catford, who has done a lot of research into the history of the club, that the original bowls green was situated at the Bedford Lawn car park and was moved to the present site in 1922. It was called Sidmouth Town Bowling Club, and changed in 1938 to Sidmouth Bowling Club. All the games to be played over the next two weeks are to be celebration games to commemorate the club's 100 years Sunday saw the start of our celebrations with a photocall of members followed by Ladies v Gents, which is always a well supported needle match and enjoyed by all. At half time we all enjoyed tea and a beautiful celebration cake decorated with the Sidmouth BC badge. This was cut and served to everyone. The result of the game was a victory for the men, winning on five rinks losing on two and drawing on one, revenge after the ladies beat us at the beginning of the season. The next match was against one of the very first clubs we played, Madeira, and we were pleased to welcome them as part of the celebrations, playing four men's and two ladies' rinks. Members presented Madeira captain Chris Fox with a plague etched with a scene of Sidmouth , and in return Sidmouth's captain, Trevor Wilkins, was presented with a framed commemorative plaque from Madeira members. The ladies' captain, Jill Bishop, received a beautiful hand-made card from Madeira's vice captain Sylvia Cook. It was a very enjoyable afternoon with a lovely friendly atmosphere as always when the club plays Madeira. The men lost 73-89 but the ladies helped out and the overall score was a win for Sidmouth by one shot, 117-116 (what would we do without the ladies?): A Appleby, R Marston, R Daniels, P Clements (skip) 8-37; R Tallent, E Mills, W Boddy, T Wilkins (skip) 22-18; A Holland, J Wall, R Seldon, C Hewett (skip) 23-14; F Adlam, M Borst, A Brown, M F D Smith (skip) 20-20. Ladies' teams: B Jones, J Green, J Fricker, J Bishop (skip) 25-12; P Harvie, D Pound, S Graham, A Newman (skip) 19-15.The first round of the mixed singles took place on Friday, with again some surprising results. The Over-60s League matches last Wednesday were all cancelled due to heavy rain. On Sunday, June 22, the club has an Open Day (9.30-noon) for anyone interested in having a go at this great game of bowls. Don't let the weather put you off as you will be given the chance to play on our three indoor rinks. CAKE CUTTERS: Tom Reynolds with ladies' captain Jill Bishop and men's captain Trevor Wilkins.
