The InterClub is a knockout competition in which most affiliated clubs in Devon participate.
This season there are some 50 entries and in 2019, the Sidmouth Bowls Club team got to the semi-final, but it was in 2004 that Sidmouth last won this most prestigious competition.
Let's hope we do well this year.
This has to be played on a neutral green as near as possible between the two competitors.
This year’s first round draw was against Bideford Strand, so the match was played at Culm Vale BC. The game consists of two rinks playing as one, as it is the aggregate score that counts.
Our players were Jean Brimson, Janice Quinn, Brenda Somerfield and skip Jill Bishop, who won 23-15 . Also Karen Hollingdale, Sue Turner, Anita Mason and skip Susie Bonnell won 23- 19.
The aggregate score finished Sidmouth 46 Bideford 34 - great result. The next round is against Bitten Park and will be played at Topsham BC at 10am on Wednesday, July 14.
Sadly, the following day they played the National TopClub and lost in all four disciplines against Ottery St. Mary ladies. Thats bowls!
Sidmouth men also played the next round of the County Trophy League, two rinks at home and two rinks playing away simultaneously.
This was against Feniton and usually playing home is an advantage, but this time the tables were turned and both home teams lost and both away teams won. The away teams were Ray Tallent ,Mark Leavers, Roger Stewart and skip Ken Wheeler, who won 16 -14 and John Richards, Wilf Radburn, Allan Davis and skip John Mason 17 –16, with the overall score 83-56 in Feniton’s favour.
Sidmouth men played a friendly at home against our neighbours Budleigh Salterton. Over the four triples, Sidmouth won on three and lost the fourth. The final result was 72 Sidmouth and 62 Budleigh. Our best triple was that of Peter Bates, John Chew and skip Mike Borst with a great score of 27-14.
We also had a home mixed friendly against Seaton and Sidmouth were not feeling very friendly to our neighbours, winning on all four rinks with an enormous overall score of 101–37. All rinks were excellent but our rink of Mary Meadows, Steve Boyle, Stewart Thomson and skip Mick Cox were the very best, winning 30 shots to 7.
This week also saw the start of the Ladies Exeter and District Over 50's League. We enter two teams in this league, the Yellows and Blues. The Yellows played at home against Seaton Red in a game of two triples with points for each. One of our Yellows had a handsome win, but the other had a not so handsome loss. However. the aggregate score finished even at 32 each, hence the points are shared.
Our winning trio was Liz Boyle, Chrissie Leedham and skip Sue Turner, who won 20 - 13. Good start to the season.
The Blues didn't fare so well just winning on one rink away to Crediton Yellow. Unfortunately, our second trio had a heavy loss. They probably didn't realise the skip against them was one of Devon’s finest, so no shame there. Our winning team was Sue Clint, Ann Capon and skip Jane Painter with a score of 14-11.
