The first Wednesday of December saw Mid Devon bring three rinks to Sidmouth to play a mixed friendly match, writes Sue and Peter Mison.

The visitors won on two rinks and by 60 shots to 47, but well done, to our winning rink of Wilf Radburn, Christa Turner, Jean Green and skip Ken Tolley (23-21).

Ladies’ Captain’s Day took place last Thursday and the clubhouse was fully decorated for Christmas with the table adorned with red, green and white cloths and serviettes with flowers to match!

The first session started at 10am with encouragement from captain Sue and vice captain Zena for their teams to win!

All three captain’s teams went into an early lead and maintained it through the course of the morning to win on all rinks, by 55 shots to 33.

Well done, to the best rink of Lorna Lever, Jenny Crow, Anne Tredget and skip Evelyn Clements who won by 21 shots to 12, and to the other winning rinks of Susie Bonnell, Maureeen Lamb, Jenny Fricker and skip Jill Bishop and Pat Ashton Pritchard, Sheila Ingyon, Paddy Chew and skip Phyll Nobbs.

The ladies playing in the afternoon session joined those of the morning session together with invited guests who had played a prominent part in the club, but who no longer bowl and nearly sixty people sat down to lunch.

We were delighted to welcome club president Harold Casson and his wife Brenda. Also present were last season’s indoor captain Marian Watson, and outdoor captain Valerie Newnham.

After lunch the battle resumed with Sue and Zena against each other. This time one of the vice captain’s teams claimed a win, but the captain won on the other two rinks and by an overall score of 48 shots to 35, resulting in an overall win for the day for the captain by 103 shots to 68. Well done, to the winning vice captain’s rink of Rosemary Brown, Doreen Pound, Mary Turner and Dreda Taylor who triumphed 18-11. The two winning captain’s teams comprised of Faye Williams, Chris Radburn, Connie Tolley and skip Freda Humphreys who were the best rink with a score of 21 shots to 9, and Jean Brimson, Sue Mison, Beryl Sparkes and skip Sheila Lewis who won by 16 shots to 8.

It was good to see our newer members taking part in the day and Sue would like to thank her committee and all the players and guests who made the day so enjoyable.

Sidmouth men played Mid Devon in the Interclub league on Saturday on the usual two at home, two away rink basis.

In a tight game Sidmouth eventually lost out overall by 70 shots to 85, but won on two rinks and drew one.

Well done to Sidmouth’s best rink of Ray Tallent, Dave Lever, Bob Daniels and skip Ron Cook who won 21-16 away from home.

In the afternoon South Dorset BA brought three mixed rinks to Sidmouth. One rink was drawn, and one rink each was won, but South Dorset won overall by 54 shots to 43.

Well done, to our winning rink Pat Hague, Alastair McGregor, Mike Daw and skip Dreda Taylor who won 18-16.

On Sunday Ottery St Mary brought three mixed rinks to Sidmouth, but on this occasion the home team triumphed on two rinks and drew on one to claim a 57-40 success.

Well done, to our best rink of Chris Radburn, Peter Verran- Smith, Jenny Fricker and skip Peter Mison who won 21-10.
