The Sidmouth Golf Club Seniors Captain’s away day took place at Lyme Regis Golf Club in fine sunny conditions with thirty six players travelling the short distance for a splendid day’s golf on a well presented course in excellent condition, with it’s beautiful views extending right across to Portland Bill, writes Chris Grubb.

A stableford competition was held, with numerous secondary prizes at stake, made for some keen competition. The winner with 38 stableford points was Brian Cole on countback from Bob Winstone in second place, with Glyn Hewitt in third place on a creditable 36 points. Brian Cole also had the least number of putts with 26 recorded during his round, and a special award went to Colin Padden who had more goes with his putter than anybody else with 41 putts.

Apparently his prize was engraved with the words: ‘ruined by a little white ball’.

Nearest the pin prizes on all the par threes were won by Colston Herbert (twice), Vernon Ruffle, and Hugh Dorliac, who had the audacity of just being inside the Captain’s effort! The longest drive was won by Lawrence Hill.

Nearest the pin in two on the 18th was won by Colin Macklin and the player with the highest number of gross pars was Bob Welsman.

The Lyme Regis course has 49 bunkers and the award for entering the most was John Bainbridge who managed to find seven of them!

Captain David Bromage thanked the players for supporting his Away Day and that it was good to hear the stories amidst the humour of the day’s golf.
