SIDMOUTH Cricket Club's six-a-side team defends its county title on Sunday at Derriford Sports Centre in Plymouth. In the second semi-final at 3pm they meet the representatives from the Plymouth competition, Mayflower Sapphires. If successful they will meet either Bovey Tracey or Heathcoat from Tiverton who contest the other semi.Sidmouth qualified for the finals with just one blot on their copybook in the league competition run at Sidmouth Sports Hall over the winter. That was a defeat by Ottery St Mary off the last ball of an enthralling match - their first defeat in the Sidmouth competition for two years. After winning the county championship last year, Sidmouth went on to be south west peninsula representatives in the regional rounds of the national competition, but came to grief against a side from the Thames Valley. This year's squad is the same as last but, going into the county finals, skipper Anthony Griffiths has a selection issue. Seam bowler Mark Jasper, who was ruled out of the county finals last year as he recovered from an operation, is available this time round. Griffiths, one half of a prolific batting partnership with Miles Dalton, is pondering if he should leave out one of last year's triumphant team to accommodate Jasper's potent pace bowling. In Sunday's match against Feniton he took on the wicket-keeping role to explore whether it was an option for him to take the gloves and leave out regular stumper John Goodwin. The seven who will travel to Plymouth, with manager Russell Ellis and scorer Alex Hill, are: Griffiths, Dalton, Goodwin, Jasper, Scott Barlow, Graham Munday and Matt Cooke.
