Here’s our weekly chat with Sidmouth CC chairman Fionn Wardrop.

First up we asked for his thoughts on a matchday of mixed fortunes with wins for the 1st and 3rd XI and the 2nd XI being left frustrated by the Braunton rain!

He said: “The firsts have had two good weekends in a row now and hold a narrow lead at the top of the table as a result. While we now lose Aviwe, who has returned to South Africa to get married, we have some very good players in form with Luke and Zac Bess leading from the front with the bat and Will Murray and Charlie Miles as consistent as ever with the ball. We also have some good candidates to step in for Aviwe, and it will be interesting to see who gets the nod.

“The second team have a tough match this weekend when we host Exeter 2nds at Woodbury CC (because we will be parking cars on The Fortfield for Folk Week).

“The gap at the top is now narrow, but we have to play several other good teams before the season closes and with only one team going up it could be an exciting finish.

The thirds are top and, with three promotion places, look set to go up a level next year. That said we will certainly be pushing for top spot!”

Next we asked for the chairman’s view on another fine summer of recently completed Friday night Colts Evenings. Fionn said: “As anyone involved in amateur sports knows the biggest thing is to recognise how much effort the volunteers put in.

“Ours have been fantastic this summer and the team of Rachel Perram, Matt Cooke, Aviwe Mgijima, Anthony Griffiths, Robbie Powell, Charlie Miles and a number of other coaches have provided cricket for more than 100 children this summer. We are incredibly grateful for their efforts.”

As ever, is there anything else you’d like to talk about? To which Fionn said: “We will be parking cars on The Fortfield when the Red Arrows visit on Friday 24th August. The cost per car will be £10, half of which will be donated to the display fund.”
