First up, this week, we asked Sidmouth CC chairman Fionn Wardrop for his thoughts on a mixed weekend for the three senior sides, with the 1st XI bouncing back to form, the 2nds continuing their 100 per cent start, but a first defeat for the third XI.

Fionn replied: “It was really pleasing to see the 1sts put together a big total and to see Josh make a ton.

“There was a piece in The Cricketer magazine this week about club players who have eluded the professional counties and I was surprised not to see Josh on the list.

“If ever a player was ‘the one that got away’ it’s Josh as he has all the attributes to be a professional player.

“On the upside, county cricket’s loss is Sidmouth’s gain!

“The 1sts have bowled well all season and the Hatherleigh performance was another example of the strength of this aspect of our game.

“Supporting this, we had Tom Simmons and Byron Knowles opening the bowling for the seconds, which has to be good news for the firsts as they are both well capable of stepping up when required.

“With depth like this it was little surprise that the 2nds were far too much for Braunton’s first team.”

He continued: “The thirds played half a good game in restricting Seaton 2nds to 138 on a decent surface, but we then failed to apply ourselves properly to the batting and were deservedly beaten. There was plenty to learn from the game and that is what 3rd team cricket is all about”

Next up we turned our attention to Dom Bess and that debut half century at Lord’s.

We asked Fionn what the feeling was back at the club’s Fortfield headquarters?

He replied: “There was a fair crowd huddled around Mike Dibble’s iPad to cheer on Dom and, apparently, he got quite a roar when he passed 50.

“Fingers firmly crossed that he plays again at Headingley as he has so much to offer and I’m really looking forward to seeing him show an international audience just how good his bowling is as well.”

Next up we asked Fionn for any news on the success that is ‘Wine and Wickets’. He responded saying: “Wine and Wickets is going well and is really well led by Kate Cooke.

“We still have room for more participants, especially as there are some softball festivals coming up, so anyone who is interested is welcome to join in on Friday nights at 7pm.”

We then asked Fionn about the colts section, with particular regard to how resplendent the Sidmouth junior teams are looking this season wearing coloured T20 kit for their matches.

He replied: “The colts look fantastic in their coloured kit. We were able to subsidise this thanks to our terrific club sponsors, Harrison-Lavers and Potbury’s, and a generous donation from a supporter which has given all of the children an opportunity to own new gear.”

Last, but not least, as is always our final question for the week – we asked if there was anything else he would like to tell us about.

The Sidmouth chairman replied: “Tony Denny does a wonderful job of uploading all of Sidmouth’s results onto our Play Cricket website (www.sidmouth.play-cricket.com) and has even gone back through the archives to add data for the past 20 years or so. If anyone is interested in local cricket statistics there is a wealth of searchable information now online.”
