Here’s our weekly chat with Sidmouth chairman Fionn Wardrop.

First up this week we simply had to ask about ‘that stunning Isaac Thomas innings’ that was struck in a game that Fionn himself was involved in.

He said: “Isaac’s double ton is the highest league knock I have seen and none of us can recall a higher score by a Sidmouth player in a league game.

“He batted beautifully and his cover driving is as good as anyone’s.

“Had it not been for an ongoing Saturday morning work commitment, Isaac would have been in the 1sts and he will deserve his promotion when it comes.

“Griff stroked it around and made the easiest looking hundred you will witness. He also selflessly ran past a straight one immediately after reaching his landmark to give Robbie Powell a bat and Robbie really cashed in by whacking an exciting 100 from 50 balls.”

We then suggested that the superb wicket that saw so many runs was further testament – if any were needed – as to how good a wicket groundsman Colin Whitehall provides for the teams at the Fortfield.

Fionn said: “Colin’s wickets are consistently excellent and, when combined with a quick outfield, provide very high and fast scoring conditions.”

Next up, we asked about the fact that, and it’s a rare event, two of the three Sidmouth senior XIs were beaten on match day eight of the league season.

Fionn said: “There were certainly mixed feelings after Saturday’s games. North Devon are good when playing at home, but we really didn’t do ourselves justice and it sounds like we were poor in all departments. The 3rds had a really good game with Bradninch with everyone contributing in some way. It’s fine to come second to a good team at this level and I’m pleased we gave them a hard contest. We’ll keep pushing and prospects are good with a strong squad assembled.”

There was also defeat on Monday evening in the semi-final of the ServiceMaster Clean Devon T20.

Fionn said: “Indeed, but there were mitigating factors for we sent to the Maer ground on Monday night an XI drawn from players who had had appeared in all three of the Saturday senior teams and they really did well to give a strong Exmouth outfit a close contest. Some of the players hadn’t played at this level before, so it is all good experience in the bank. Our senior players, Luke Bess, Matt Cooke and Nick Gingell, led very well with their performances.”

We then turned our attention to the big game at Sidmouth on Sunday when the Fortfield plays host to the Unicorn KO Trophy semi-final.

Fionn said: “We are really looking forward to the Unicorn semi-final and seeing the in-form Bess brothers and Scott Barlow representing Sidmouth in the Devon team. Play starts at noon and it is fantastic for us as a club to host such a prestigious match. Spectators are very welcome. Good luck to Devon!”

We ended, as we always do, by asking the chairman if there was anything else he would like to highlight and he replied saying: “We will be hosting our first Women’s Softball Festival on Sunday week (July 8), which we are really looking forward to. Play will start at 10am and everyone is welcome.”
