Here’s our weekly chat about all things Sidmouth Cricket Club with Chairman Fionn Wardrop.

First up this week we asked about his take on another clean sweep of wins for the club’s senor XIs in their respective Tolchards Devon league matches.

He said: “Having been away for the last week I’m afraid I have viewed results from a distance, so can’t offer too much by the way of insight!

“All three teams put on dominant performances and you can’t ask for more than a 60 point weekend.

“Zac Bess has been outstanding for the past couple of seasons and it was great to see he hit a big ton on Saturday.

“He always contributes to the team performance and last weekend he was the star. “Another who falls into that category is Lee Clayden who took five wickets for the third XI.

“Lee is the most willing bowler around and doesn’t always get his due rewards, so it was very pleasing to see him and Zac on the league honours board this week.”

Next up we focussed on asking the chairman about the fact that with all three XIs in contention for their divisional titles, what chance a clean sweep of honours?

He answered: “I’m swerving that as it’s too soon to be discussing titles! There is plenty of hard cricket to be played yet, particularly for the 1st XI.

“Aviwe Mgijima leaves us at the end of July (as was always planned - he is off to get married before the start of his pro-season in South Africa) which will leave a big hole, but also create an excellent opportunity for one of our players.”

Next we asked for his view on the continued praise being heaped on the club by sides visiting Fortfield in the new all-through league’s C Division East – the latest being Whimple who were highly complimentary about the Fortfield wicket despite suffering a heavy nine wicket defeat.

Fionn says: “We are very blessed with the situation of our ground - and these days with playing surfaces to match - and it gives me massive pleasure to hear the opposition have enjoyed their visit, regardless of the result.”

Next to the ladies at Sidmouth and what appeared to be a very successful festival of ladies cricket last Sunday at the Fortfield. Fionn says: “We had some great feedback from our visitors on Sunday and I really hope that everyone enjoyed some good sport and had a great time.

“Women’s cricket is an area of our club that we really want to grow and support. Kate Cooke has done a fantastic job of creating a sizeable squad who train every Friday and seem to really enjoy their cricket.”

Last, but no least, we asked the chairman if there was anything else he wanted to mention and he replied: “I’d be really grateful if anyone who hasn’t yet signed up for the John Palmer lunch on Sunday, July 29, and would like to come, could get in touch with me as soon as possible: fionnwardrop@yahoo.co.uk.”
