Sidmouth 17, Ivybridge 31. A strong second half comeback by Sidmouth Colts meant both sides ended with credit for quality and commitment, but Ivybridge had done enough in the first half to close out a deserved win.

The physicality and leadership of their excellent flanker kept the visitors on the front foot and their well organised midfield had good quality ball and time to execute against a stretched Sidmouth defence.

By half time Sidmouth were three tries down but had gifted possession to Ivybridge from four restarts and a number of line-outs.

Better execution in possession and better chop tackling would have made it much harder for Ivybridge to get the essential momentum and pressure which inevitably breaks down defences.

Second half positional changes in the Sidmouth backs paid-off and with Dan Powell at full back the team looked well balanced and threatening in attack. Forwards Haydon Down, Rabbie Hansford and John Pares all had strong games and Kyle Baker and Sam Smith both made an impact off the bench.

Harry West switched to stand-off and his distribution gave the Sidmouth midfield early ball and the opportunity to stretch the visitors defence.

A sustained period of Sidmouth pressure brought a try for hooker Joe Herbert and with 15 minutes to go a midfield break and score by George Locke put Sidmouth in control and made for an exciting climax.

This tough game was excellent preparation for the first leg of the cup away to Barnstaple on Saturday where supporters will be made most welcome!
