Sidmouth Colts 10, Honiton Colts 10 Honours ended even after an enthralling derby encounter between two evenly-matched Colts teams.

Honiton were impressive in terms of their commitment to close down the Sidmouth backs and this tactic stifled any go-forward for Sidmouth who lacked leadership and execution at important times.

With a hefty group unavailable, it was a great opportunity for a number of Sidmouth Colts to make an impression and also a first chance to hook-up with three of the current Under-16 side, George Welch, Angus Eaton and Dave Chan, who all did very well on their colt’s debuts which augers well for the next campaign.

Sidmouth started positively and although they fluffed a kick-off the resulting play took the Colts into the Honiton half where they were able to go through several phases and looked on the cusp of scoring, only to be denied.

This was the story for much of the game which, at the half way mark saw Honiton hold a three-point advantage.

After the break Dan Powell made an excellent long kick which had the Honiton full back under pressure. This proved to be a turning point in the game.

Sidmouth had an easy tackle which would lead to excellent field position; the tackle was missed, as were the next two and Honiton scored an slick 80-metre try to put them 10-0 up.

Fortunately, the Colts had enough character to come-back and two tries by Charlie Cotton salvaged a draw.

With a tasty away trip to Weston Hornets this weekend followed by the much anticipated Christmas Karaoke on December 21, and the chance of a good run in the Devon Plate Competition, there is plenty to look forward to for the rest of the season.
