Playing once again at The Blackmore, Sidmouth Colts rewarded the local faithful with a strong display of skills and moments of flamboyant rugby.

Having played their best rugby to date in beating Exmouth two weeks ago and with an excellent display against Exeter Chiefs last week, Sidmouth took to the field knowing they had to maintain the momentum.

From the first whistle their intention was clear with the received ball caught cleanly by the impressive Hugo Gosden and run straight at Torrington forwards. Three phases later, Robbie Ross crossed the line and Sidmouth were on their way.

A strong set of forwards, clearly benefiting from the coaching sessions from 1st XV players and coaches, were able to set the platform for the backs to take their opportunities.

With Sidmouth at last finding a first class hooker in Barney St Anton, complemented by the Slim Twins (Gareth Pearson and James Cooney) at prop, Sidmouth were able to dictate the scrums.

The line outs also showed much improvement with Lewis Tollerfield taking his own and spoiling the opposition’s ball.

The domination at the set piece ensured good possession, allowing half backs Johnny Hamill and James Powell to choose the point of attack.

So effectively was this done that Sidmouth crossed for two more tries within the first 15 minutes, with both James Bond and James Powell taking their opportunities well. No 8 Gosden converting two of the three.

Torrington, however, had not travelled 57 miles to watch Sidmouth play and settled in the second quarter, slowing down the Sidmouth attacks and working hard at the breakdown to balance the play.

With a further try from James Bond before half time, Sidmouth went in comfortably ahead at 24-3.

The Sidmouth coaches made wholesale changes at half time to ensure all players had time and also to give a first outing to Michael Bond, Gavin Pearson and Bryn Henrickson from the under-16s. The three youngsters all added pace and determination against an improving Torrington and each acquitted himself well.

With another converted try from James Powell matched by Torrington the second half was drawn, but Torrington left having been well beaten by Sidmouth.
