Sidmouth will be crowned the 2014 Francis Clark Devon League champions in front of the Fortfield faithful next Saturday if they can continue their glorious unbeaten season tomorrow when they visit the County Ground to take on Exeter.

Last Saturday’s 22-point home success over Sandford powered Will Murray’s men ever closer to the winning line, one they will cross a week tomorrow when nearest rivals Plymouth are the visitors to East Devon.

There were contributions down to order in a regulation success over Sandford. Teenager Harvey Sargent was promoted to the senior ranks in the absence of Liam Lewis who was attending a weeding and the youngster continued his impressive rise to prominence with a mature innings of 25, helping Devon skipper Josh Bess to put on 80 for the first wicket. Will Sobczak chipped in with 31 and Anthony Griffiths hit 48 before rare failures for Pete Randerson (2) and Matt Cooke (6). With Bess the other of the top six returned to the pavilion – in his case not before he had stroked his way to yet another half century – the Fortfield men were 212-6.

Greg Chaplin (37), Scott Barlow (14) and skipper Murray (15) all weighed in as the home innings closed on 267-8 after 50 overs.

Just two visiting batsmen chalked up double figure scores as wickets fell at regular intervals until the last one went down with the Sandford reply on 83.

Dan Babula was the pick of the bowlers. The Aussie claimed a ‘fivefer’, ending with figures of 5-28 from his seven over shift.

Bess bagged a brace and Charlie Miles picked up three wickets as the Mid Devon were beaten by a whopping 184 runs.

Sidmouth II powered their way to a declaration at 259-6 with runs down the order. The primary provider of the runs against hosts Sandford II was Nick Gingell with 79 and there was a half century for Will Gater (55) as well as contributions from Saj Patidar (33), Nick Mansfield (33) and Matt Hewer (31).

Charlie Dibble picked up three wickets as the Creedy Park men were bundled out for 147 to leave Sidmouth winners by 112 runs.

The third eleven were beaten by Abbotskerswell II, going down by five wickets.
