Here’s our weekly chat with Sidmouth chairman Fionn Wardrop.

First up this week we asked him for his thoughts on another ‘Super Saturday’ that saw all three men’s senior sides win their respective Tolchards Devon League games.

He said: “It was a good weekend and great to see four of our players on the honours board as a result, with Zac Bess taking five wickets and centuries for Louis Adey, Henry Gater and Saj Patidar.

Next we asked about a thrilling 2nd XI game, one that went down to the wire.

Fionn said: “It certainly sounded like a thriller and huge credit must go to the team for digging out a win when they looked second favourites. Isaac Thomas did a great job as a stand in bowler to pinch three wickets at a crucial time.”

We then turned our attention to Dom Bess and the conclusion of his first (of many we hope) England Test series, the 1-1 draw with Pakistan.

Fionn said: “Dom debut series couldn’t have gone much better. He was selected as a bowler and it was fantastic to see him taking wickets on Sunday afternoon.

“His batting was really gutsy and he looks technically excellent. Even Geoff Boycott said so!

“The catch was no surprise for anyone who has watched him play for Somerset; he is one of the best fielders in English cricket.”

With regard to Sunday’s big Fortfield occasion and the Unicorns KO Cup match for Devon against Dorset, the Sidmouth chairman says: “Devon play their Unicorns Trophy quarter final against Berkshire on Sunday. Play starts at 11am and all are welcome. The bar and food will be available all day.”

Next up, we moved to the on-going success of the club’s junior section.

Fionn says: “Matt Cooke has done a great job of running the All Stars, with around 70 children participating.

“Anthony Griffiths looks after them as they move into the Under-9 age group and Rachel Perram does a grand job of looking after the colt’s teams and anyone who wants to play is welcome to join us on Friday evenings.”

With regard to the ladies and the ‘Wine and Wickets’ concept, Fionn says: “Our Wine and Wickets sessions continue to go very well. There have been several new players joining the wine and wickets group recently and we always have room for more. Training is at 7pm on Friday evenings.”

Last, but certainly not least we asked the Sidmouth chairman to throw the spotlight on anything else that’s current at the cricket club.

He said: “Our home match with Warwickshire Imps on Sunday, July 29, will be the Johnny Palmer memorial game.

“Johnny would have played against the Imps many times and we will mark his amazing contribution to our club. More details of the game will come from the club in due course.”
