A PROUD Sidmouth woman has told of her husband and son's dedication in their bid to raise funds for a hospital caring for their cancer-stricken teenage relative.Roger and Marcus Worthington, of Arcot Road, are currently cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End in aid of Christies Hospital in Manchester.Their 16-year-old family member Josh, nephew to Roger and cousin to Marcus, is undergoing chemotherapy at the hospital since being diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma in February. The reality of the situation hit Marcus, 19, hard, as his brother, Jacob, is only a few months older than Josh, and he came up with the idea of the charity bike ride.Ann Worthington, mum of Marcus and wife of Roger, said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to bits with both of them. I'm hugely proud of both of them. My husband is a born adventurer and when Marcus asked him his face lit up. He didn't even consider it for a nanosecond."The father-and-son team began their journey on June 4 and hope to complete it within 16 days.Roger, a senior landscape architect at the Forestry Commission, even sacrificed peace and quiet on his 46th birthday last week to take part in the ride.Their route takes them through Manchester, where they will be stopping to pay a visit to Josh, who has finished his third stage of chemotherapy. The pair were originally hoping to raise 1,000 but have already exceeded their target.Ann, 55, added: "People have been amazingly generous, which is very encouraging for both of them."Marcus's girlfriend, Jess, has been very supportive and has been instrumental in gaining sponsorship."Marcus, who begins an MSc degree in maths at Birmingham University, and Roger are writing a blog of their adventure, which they update every day.
