The annual Digger Cup, in memory of H P ‘Digger’ Reed of Sidmouth golfing fame and, of course, the Diggers Rest pub, was played on Saturday, writes Hugh Dorliac.

Played as a bogey format where you play against the course and where par is level, a nett birdie is plus one and anything over par is minus one, coming in with a plus score is a good achievement.

Recent new member Rob Brookshaw made full use of his handicap to record a very creditable score of five to win the competition.

He will now be playing off 26, much to the relief of his fellow competitiors. Close behind him were Pat McCormack and Lester Willmington, both recording a score of four and picking up second and third prizes.

Probably the player feeling most upset is Bob Webber, who, with a score of two, came fourth, and was outside the prizes, but had to take a one shot hit to his handicap, dropping from 14 to 13.
