Sidmouth edged out in Emerton Court match at Stover

Sidmouth played their first quarter-final Emerton Court match away from home against Stover Golf Club, writes Hugh Dorliac.
Stover put out a team of mostly single figure handicappers and so, for a change, all Sidmouth players were receiving shots from their opponents. The first match was a tough encounter against Stover’s leading pair.
Sidmouth pair David Cowler and John Barnard had a chance to halve the match going down the 18th, but lost out to some superb putting from the local team. Matches two and three, Graham Rogers with Pat McCormack and David Fish with Bob Webber, were nip and tuck affairs all the way and Sidmouth were pleased to come away with a half in both these matches.
Match four saw steady golf played by the Sidmouth pair of Trevor Kerridge and Brian Rice to bring home a whole point for Sidmouth.
Chris Timms and partner Ray Gunston in match five, also played well only to bow out on the 16th to a Stover pair that made most of home advantage.
So Sidmouth came away with two points on the day and hope home advantage will see them through to the semi-finals when they play the second leg at Sidmouth in a week’s time.
A decent field of Sidmouth golfers played the annual Potburys Trophy competition last weekend, which provided some excellent scores and a surprise result.
With separate prizes for men and lady competitors the results were as follows:
In third place for the men on 41 points, were Kym White and Terry Jones. Second, on countback, were Merv Anthony and George West, whilst the winning men’s team was Trevor Kerridge and Allan Malcolm on 42 points
The winners of the ladies category were ladies captain Sheila Faulkner with partner Marie Timms, on a superb 43 points, claiming the win over runners up on countback from Sheila Skitrall and Sheila Tallon who had also scored 43.
This means the Potbury Trophy for best score goes to Sheila and Marie and will be presented at the annual prize giving evening. Congratulations, to them and all the winning teams.
