A Sidmouth four were edged out in the Section Three B final of the County Fours competition when they lost to a Madeira quartet on Wednesday evening, writes Carol Smith.

The Sidmouth four of Mark Stephens, Barry Curwen, John Mason and skip Bob Seldon did not start too well and were 12-5 down at one stage.

However, they dug deep and battled back and, on the penultimate end, held a two shot lead at 17-15, but, on the last end, the opposition managed to bag two shots to make the overall score 17-all and force the tie into an ‘extra end’.

Sidmouth were holding shot, but with his last wood, opposing skip Bill Davis drew a perfect shot to give the Madeira team of himself, Martyn Eveleigh, Cliff Skinner and Terry Reardon, the overall match honours.

The Sidmouth team reached the final after a thrilling semi-final success in which they had gone into the last end one shot down, but managed to score three shots on that final end to take the match 21 shots to 19.
