The sound of the ringing bell can be heard over quite a lot of the course at Sidmouth Golf Club, writes John Barnard.

It is situated near the 18th tee, but it is used by golfers to tell the group behind on the seventeenth tee that it is safe to play as it is a ‘blind drive’ to a fairway (hopefully) over the hill.

The bell sees quite a lot of action and the previous bell had developed a crack, either through over use or as the result of an overly enthusiastic whack by a disappointed golfer.

The Sidmouth Golf Club seniors section decided this would be a good way of marking 2016 seniors’ captain Hugh Dorliac’s year of office and offered to replace the bell from their funds.

The bell is now in place, with one of the best views on the course and hopefully, will keep all golfers safe to complete their round.
