On Tuesday, a unique event was held at Sidmouth Golf Club.

Club captain John Barnard and club manager Jonathan Lee, played four separate 18 hole matches against different sponsors, to raise funds for the new putting green and first tee project and the whole day was sponsored by Tolchards Ltd.

First up, at 6am were Bater Removals, who fielded Nick Bater and David Bater. After a great battle, the Baters lost by two holes, but the bacon rolls after were great compensation.

Next up were Duke’s (the Inn by the Sea) who were represented by Mark Seward and Richard Eley and teed off at 9.30am.

The weather had warmed up by the as had the manager who went around in level gross for a relatively easy win.

At 1.15 pm Charles Stanley were represented by father and son John and Paul Lewis. Fortunately, the weather had clouded over a little but the Manager was still on form and again, he shot level gross to win three-and-two.

At 4.45pm, Melluish Tiling were the last playing sponsors, and put forward owner Craig Melluish and Chris Roberts. Jonathan and John knew they were now under pressure as these two have been playing well recently and they now had 54 holes of golf dragging on their feet, backs and arms. As they walked over the hill on the72nd hole at around 8pm, they were met by an army of supporters on the Club balcony playing musical instruments, cheering and encouraging and they won this match by one.

Jonathan had shot, 73, 66, 66 and a 76 while John had gone round in 73, 77, 77 and 80, so in all a sum total of 586 shots.

In the clubhouse, a tired, but proud club captain, confirmed that the £5000 needed to undertake the project had now been collected, including £2000 raised on the day.
