The Sidmouth Jewellers Friday Stableford saw James Pickard, playing off +2, score a solid 39 points to win from David Fitzhenry and Steve Perry, both on 37 points.
The annual Deane Medals was played over two divisions. Division 1 was won by John Jones with and excellent net 61. Second placed Jonathan Lee on 64 just pipped Andy Denning on countback. In Division 2, Mike Dibble took the medal with 63, ahead of Nigel Sharp on 66 and John Cowan on 67.
The first leg of the annual Picture Match against local rivals East Devon was played on the Budleigh course in brutal conditions. Our foursome pairs began well with a 1 up win by Jonathan Lee and Nick Gingell, but the remaining 3 pairs were seen off handsomely by East Devon to make the early halfway score 1.5 to Sidmouth and 4.5 to East Devon.
The singles redeemed themselves, winning three matches through Neil Holland, Duncan Taylor and James Spiller, with a half from John Jones. Overall the score on the day was 9 points to the home team and 5 to Sidmouth, with everything to play for in the home leg later in the year.
The seniors played the yellow ball competition, where players play a designated yellow ball in turns to score double points with it or until it is lost.
Some teams managed good scores and first place with 102 points went to Brian Margison, Brian Cole and Roy Smith. Also scoring well were Mike Davis, Colin MItchell and Vernon Ruffle with a solid 101. Keith James and John Barnard won the nearest the pin prizes.
In the Upper Crust Bakery Monday Stableford, local postie Simon Moore secured the win with 41 points. Not far behind was Nick Gingell on 40 and in third Lewis Perry posted 38 points.
Sidmouth Seniors played a match with Axe Cliff but, due to illness and injury, both teams lost a player, so the captains for the day, Brian Rice of Sidmouth and John Hanna of Axe Cliff went out first playing a singles match. Brian was 5 up at the turn but then lost the next four holes on the trot. Thankfully, he recovered to win the match on the 17th, winning 2 and 1.
Chris Grubb and Vernon Ruffle ended up losing 3 and 2 on the 16th. In another tight game, Phil Spencer and Roger Bawden lost the last 3 holes to concede the match 2 down.
Mike Davis and Bruce Harcourt won 6 and 4, while Bernie Millward and Paul Blay won 4 and 2. David Bromage and Les Pratt won 4 and 3. This gave Sidmouth a 4-2 victory to take into the return match at Axe Cliff in September.
Dartmoor League team captain Steve Milton won with a solid 42 in the Friday stableford. Nick Gingell on 40 and ever-present Dan Colson on 39 came third.
The Upper Crust Monday Stableford was won on countback by Ben Gibbs from John Jones, both having posted an excellent 42 points apiece. Third spot went to Jonathan Lee, with Graham Rogers taking the seniors top prize with 41 points.
Afterwards, both winners and other players could enjoy a drink and food inside for the first time for months and it was delightful to sense the return of that warm and friendly atmosphere to the clubhouse once again.
