A baking hot day greeted Seniors’ captain Phil Spencer for this year's delayed Seniors Open. Understandably, visitor numbers were slightly down but all enjoyed a course set out in excellent condition and a warm Sidmouth welcome.
Winning pairs for the visitors were J. McPherson of Teignmouth and P. Ford of Carlyon Bay on 39 points, just beating A. Chandler and P. Rogers on countback, with M. Drennan and R. Lehal in third on 36.
The locals did a little better with David Millen and Alan Billinghurst scoring 41 to take top spot, also on countback from Paul Blay and Charles Brown. Club captain John Barnard, partnering Lester Willmington, took third with 40. Phil was pleased to report over £420 was raised on the day for the club charity.
It was this pairing that shone the following day as the Emerton Court team travelled up to Saunton for the second leg, seeking just one win or two halved matches to proceed to the next round against Dainton Park.
On home soil, Saunton were a different proposition and started strong, with Bob Johnston and Dave Hoare unable to dent the play of the single handicappers they came up against.
However, in match two, both John and especially Lester were on song and took the lead and kept the opposition at bay down the home stretch to take the required point.
Despite great efforts, none of the following Sidmouth pairings could emulate their captain, but a happy Sidmouh team enjoyed the post-match meal and next have a home leg against Dainton on Tuesday, June 22.
The Sidmouth Jewellers Friday stableford was claimed by Adrian Priest with a solid 41 points, pipping Tom Butler on countback. A new name on the leaderboard, Russell Bess, took third with 37.
The annual running of the Vallance Cup was won by local mover and shaker Nick Bater with 39 points from second placed Andrew Pryke 38 and David Burgess 37 coming third.
