The beginning of the heat wave was much appreciated during Monday’s Charles Stanley Stableford, writes John Barnard.

All golfers enjoy the sun on their backs and taking most advantage (although he played in the cooler part of the day) was Moray Bosence.

It was very different the day before, playing at East Devon in an Open with heavy rain for the first few holes, Moray accumulated three points on the front nine and not much better on the back. What a difference a day makes!

Back to his home course, he was out in 21 points and the same on the way home to record a gross 68 and 42 stableford points to earn a reduction in his handicap to seven.

In second place with 39 points was Craig Melluish, regularly in the prizes this month. Craig had a very consistent round, except for a double bogey on the sixth, but 11 pars meant his handicap was also reduced by one to 10.

In third place with 38 points, club manager Jonathan Lee, started with three birdies in the first four holes but a double bogie on five and a seven on the 16th messed up what could have been an excellent round.

He was grateful for the moral support his playing partners gave him after his double hit on the 16th, once they had stopped laughing! Who needs friends.

John Jones still leads the birdie count on 41 although Jonathan reduced his lead to 12 and John leads the eclectic by one shot from Simon Knowles.
