Sidmouth based ladies featured well in the recent Captains Day competition at Honiton, writes John Pawley.

The ladies division was won by Janet Hughes (37) with Catherine Doherty (34) next followed by Lady Captain Jane Watts with 34 pts.

As a finale, teams of four competed to see who could finish a par 5 hole in the shortest time. Requiring an accurate drive, approach, chip and put by each member. The winning Honiton team of Julian Phillips, James Pickard, Stewart Slater and Julian Netherway took on the near 500 yd 9th - and achieved a time of one minute and 3.9 seconds. Next team please?

Cherry Liell and Bob Barnes had an impressive 43 points in a Rye foursomes in the mixed meet last Tuesday. Janet and David Hughes were second with 39 points, and Vicki and Barry Rogers third with 36 points.

The Vets Cup was the target for seniors’ on Friday. Two players came in with a score of 66, earning themselves a handicap adjustment, and it was Pat Purtell who lost on countback to captain Alan Pollock. Third and fourth were Stan Squire and Roger Matthews with 68, again separated on countback with John Fleetwood next on 69. Div two was won by Kit Barker with a 71 followed by that frequent podium finisher, Sidmouth based Bob Cockett on 72. The next three places, all with 73 and so separated by count-back were, in order, Fred Thomas, Brian Morrison and Dave Morgan.
