Sunday saw the first leg of the Picture Match being played at Sidmouth Golf Club.

This fixture first began in 1932 and is a home and away competition against East Devon Golf Club, with a framed picture including the original invitation from East Devon and Sidmouth’s response, the prize.

It’s a day that the best players represent the club by playing foursomes matchplay in the morning and individual matchplay in the afternoon, so 36 holes of gruelling golf.

Unfortunately, the day got off to a bad start as the weather intervened with a thick sea mist enveloping the course.

A few matches got started but were called in as the visibility deteriorated.

After the eight morning matches, it was 4-4, not a great start for Sidmouth as it’s important to use home advantage to create a big lead before the away league.

Picture match captain Chris Lewis encouraged the troops over lunch so the early starters set off with high hopes.

Unfortunately, it didn’t play out as hoped and although the singles were won 9-7, this only means a two-point advantage to take to East Devon in September.
