In the latest round of East Devon League matches, Sidmouth were playing Exminster at Honiton on Saturday, writes Hugh Dorliac.

On a very hot, sticky day for all, Moray Bosence and Jim Anderton kept up to their unbeaten run and brought back the only win for the side by a margin of two-and-one.

Kym White with Terry Jones didn't fare so well going down three-and-one. Next out were team captain Harrison Jones with Mark Bathard and they bagged a well-earned half in a very tight match in which it is reported the captain got carried around 18 holes by the new squad member!

Tough opposition in the other two matches resulted in losses for Marc Jenkins with Sean Murphy and Steve Channing and partner Jeremy Holden. The final score was 3.5 to 1.5 in favour of Exminster. Sidmouth can pick up some points next time round at Teign Valley.

On a positive note, the club's Palairet team made their way into the quarter-finals of the knockout competition with a great win against Great Torrington at Fingle Glen on Sunday.

The stars of the show were undoubtedly Matt Bavington and Damian Gee, who, being one down with three to play, evened the game after 18 to take the contest to the 19th.

Matt crunched a driver pin high at the par four first; and the opposition put their ball into the pond. Game over!

Added to wins from Duncan Taylor and David Bater and last (and retro) pair Phil Grover and Simon Moore, it all gave the team the 3 points necessary to progress to a clash with Tiverton on July 28 at a venue yet to be announced.
