Sidmouth Jewellers joy for Wenham

The fourteenth round of the Sidmouth Jewellers Friday night league had a very low turnout this week, no doubt due to the Macmillan Charity Golf Day running at the same time, writes John Barnard.

Taking advantage was Lee Wenham who won with 36 points, which will have surprised him. He dropped a few shots in the first six holes, but then steadied up and then played mainly par golf except he dropped a shot on each of the last two holes.

In second place was David Pepperell, also with 36 points but he lost on countback over the second nine. Initially playing great golf with pars and a couple of birdies, the slow pace of play eventually wore him down and he had double bogies on holes 12 and 13 which cost him another victory.

Third was Dan Griffits with 34 points. A new name to the leader board, playing off a handicap of 22 he had two birdies in the last six holes which smartened up his card.

In the all important Friday night league, Mark Thomas looked as if the pack might start to catch him up as he lived up to his nickname ‘Shanker’ and had possibly his worse round of the season.

However, the player closest to him (Craig Melluish) had an even worse day so Mark’s lead is still 14 points, but Lee Wenham closed to within a point of Craig second spot.
