Sidmouth 1st Ladies 2, Penzance 2

The sun was out, making a nice change from last week, and the ladies were hopeful that that would be true of our run of luck too.

Penzance had an early start to drive up to Sidmouth for an 11am push back and their tiredness showed through Sidmouth's domination in the first 15 minutes of the game.

There was some brilliant attacking play from Taryn Beuthin and Lea Pidgeon, working and passing well together through the middle, breaking up Penzance's defence. However, there were several strong saves from the Penzance keeper who seemed to 'man up' to the occasion.

There was a slight change to the midfield positions this week which enabled the ball to be switched around the pitch effectively giving Karen Cann and Sarah Hutchings on the wing many opportunities to attack.

Penzance's defence stood strong through several unconverted short corners, which gave their team strength to attack past the half way line!

Brilliant interceptions from Chloe Munn, and several sweeps out of the D from Lucy Broad, prevented them from scoring.

Unfortunately, after several brilliant saves from Hayley Delasalle, a lucky deflection off a Penzance player in the D sent the ball through the air. An attacker managed to connect her stick and sneak it past the keeper, adding to Sidmouth's frustration. The second half brought changes in the line up and a positive outlook.

Attacking straight from the start put pressure on the Penzance defence and, after several strikes in the D, Sidmouth's persistence paid off and Sarah Cloke scored. Strong defending from Janet Jones and Claire Choules prevented Penzance from converting their attacks.

A fantastic display of skills from Sara Roberts, driving the ball up the pitch, past several defenders and beating the keeper in a one-on-one, led to her scoring an incredible goal.

With Sidmouth 2-1 up at this point there was a small lapse in their concentration that unfortunately led to Penzance scoring on the break.

A brilliant team effort from Sidmouth and much improvement after last week's game.
