Sidmouth Bowls Club ladies pulled out all the stops to host 48 players and their visitors for the ladies’ Devon County president Margaret Brotheridge and also for Section Three captain, Jacky Howle (also senior vice-president), writes Susie Bonnell.

The Sidmouth joint lady captain’s, Jill Bishop and Ann Capon, together with their committee arrived early to prepare the afternoon tea, unaware of the storm clouds rolling in!

At 2pm, after handing over the green to the president and the Section Three captain, the game commenced.

With only one trial end bowled suddenly the heavens opened and a deluge of rain mixed with hailstones came down upon the players. It was sudden and torrential and stopped the game for about half an hour. With 48 soaking wet players milling around inside the club waiting for the rain to stop, Sidmouth’s Bowls Club was more like a sauna!

Finally, the players re-assembled for play and despite much wringing out of bowls cloths, the game got under way and managed to get through the full 21 ends. The end result was a win for the Section Three players with Sidmouth’s team of Ann Capon, Brenda Somerfield, Eileen Hewett and Jill Bishop, achieving the top rink score.

Also representing Sidmouth for the Section Three team were; Jean Brimson, Chris Hamer and Susie Bonnell.

Other clubs representing Section Three were Chardstock, Feniton, Honiton, Madeira and Ottery St Mary.
