It was another busy week last week for Sidmouth bowlers, write Sue and Peter Mison.

Sidmouth men played another match in the County Trophy Over 60’s league, this time against Axminster on the usual home and away basis.

Axminster proved to be the stronger on this occasion, winning by three rinks to one with an overall score of 81 shots to 73.

Well done, to the winning away rink of Bill Dunbar, Peter Mison, John Mason and skip Bob Seldon who won by 33 shots to 16.

On Thursday Sidmouth ladies played their third round of the Masons Trophy against Exonia on a one rink at home, one away basis.

Sadly Exonia were too strong for us and we lost on both rinks.

However, Sidmouth had progressed further than ever before in this competition so well done to our players Jan Jameson Bates, Sue Mison, Zena Johnson and skip Chris Hamer, and Pat Ashton Pritchard, Paddy Wrench, Evelyn Clements and skip Eileen Hewett.

On Saturday morning Sidmouth men played the first round of the County Trophy competition against South Hams which involves five disciplines: two wood and four wood singles, pairs, triples and rink.

Three of the disciplines were played at Sidmouth with the other two being played away. Sidmouth Men have found it hard to find their form this season and unfortunately, South Hams proved too strong on the day, winning all five matches.

Sidmouth ladies played their second round of the Yetton Plate against South Hams on Saturday afternoon, two rinks at home, two away.

Congratulations to the two winning home teams of Lorna Lever, Mary Bristow, Evelyn Clements and skip Eileen Hewett who won by 23 shots to 17 and Pat Ashton Pritchard, Anita Mason, Pat Harvie and skip Dreda Taylor who won by 19 shots to 14. Unfortunately, the away teams did not fare so well on an unheated rink on a cold afternoon and the match was lost overall by 17 shots.

The same afternoon nine of our ladies went to Honiton to play a triples match. This was a tight game against one of our closest rivals with Honiton winning overall by three shots. Sidmouth won one rink, drew on one, and lost on the other with our winning rink being Susie Bonnell, Freda Humphreys and skip Jenny Fricker winning by 12 shots to 11.

Budleigh Salterton brought two ladies rinks to play us and were beaten 44-29 with Sidmouth winning on one rink and drawing on the other.

Well done, to the winning rink of Maureen Lamb, Beryl Sparkes, Shirley Rose and skip Jill Bishop who won by 26 shots to 11.
