Sidmouth B were beaten in their meeting with The Warren at Dawlish, writes George Carr.
However, despite losing the match 5-1, Colin Macklin’s men retained the bragging rights (not that important in these popular and friendly fixtures - whisper it quietly) winning six-and-a-half to five-and-a-half over the two games.
There is always a friendly welcome at the Warren but the golf is keenly contested. Most matches were close with the captain and his partner going down 2-1 while John Barnard and Simon Emerson, Hugh Doriac and Merve Baker took their hosts to the 18th to lose by one. Barry Venn and Steve Channing, however, did not find links golf to their liking and were well beaten.
The day was saved by a remarkable win by Laurie Quinn and Lester Wilmington who triumphed six up with five to play and changed their captain’s after dinner speech entirely.
Lester Wilmington, moreover, won the prize for nearest the pin on the 16th and a bottle of wine was his - or was it?
