SIDMOUTH Ladies made the long trip to Cornwall for the second week running, knowing that there was going to be a tough game in store.

Sidmouth started off slowly and were obviously struggling after sitting in the car for so long. Newquay gained an early advantage by gaining a short corner within the first few minutes, which they converted.

Sidmouth woke up and attacked the Newquay defence from the restart with Taryn Beuthin and Dukes Man of the Match, Sarah Roberts, working well together up front.

Sarah Thomas took on the keeper and made and excellent pass to Roberts on the post to level the score.

For the rest of the half Sidmouth continued to pressurise the Newquay defence and, after a string of short corners, were unable to score, despite a shot being stopped on the line shortly before half time.

Sidmouth continued to attack after their half time team talk, eager to get a goal to put them in the lead. After 10 minutes of constant pressure Newquay managed to break and catch the Sidmouth defence off guard, scoring against the run of play. Sidmouth didn't let their heads drop, but, after more short-corners and attacking play, were still unable to score with a shot from Anna Cloke hitting the post. Newquay extended their lead, despite great defending from Roberts, Janet Jones and Sarah Hutchins.

Sidmouth, still determined not to give up, continued to press on Newquay and it was a well-taken short-corner from Beuthin that closed the gap between the two teams. With not long left, Karen Cann brought the score level.

With Sidmouth happy to be getting a point they lost focus, which led to an excellent through ball finding the Newquay centre forward and she scored the winning goal in the dying seconds.

This week Sidmouth Ladies 1st are home at Sidmouth College to Penzance at 11am.

Honiton Hornets 2

The sidmouth 2nds were looking forward to a home match against the Honiton Hornets on Saturday.

Honiton set a quick pace to the game from the outset and challenged the Sid defence; Clare Choules and Charlotte Hill kept the back line strong and prevented Honiton from scoring in a tough first half.

After the break, Sidmouth challenged much more confidently and got some shots on target from short corners. Sidmouth soon took the lead with a goal from Sidmouth's Chrissie Mitchell.

The Hornets had a few breaks, levelled and took a 2-1 lead. Despite losing a defender and consequently having to change the format slightly, much of the rest of the play remained at Sid's attacking end, however the final score remained 2-1 to Honiton.

Sarah Dean was voted Player of the Match.
