Sidmouth martial arts student Robyn Clifford has gained the coveted black belt.

It was presented by Gerry Waugh who teaches at Sidmouth, Axminster and Lyme Regis.

Although Robyn was the first student to train all the way from white to black belt with Mr Waugh, she was not the first student to whom he had presented a black belt in Sidmouth.

When he took over the class in 2010, Michael Elsom had already been training there for around three years.

Mr Waugh helped him achieve the last few belts towards black belt, which he gained in 2012, at the age of just 10. Junior black belts have to train for a long period before they can go for 2nd Dan, but they can follow an intermediate system, called ‘Star Gradings’ to mark their progress.

Mr Waugh also presented Michael with his 2nd Star, indicating that he is midway towards 2nd Dan, and he and Robyn will now train together in Sidmouth towards this goal, often crossing paths with Pat and Nick along the way as their tae kwon-do journeys continue.
