Sidmouth men land superb Over-60s win at Seaton

We had the sunshine, the beautiful Royal Wedding, the FA Cup final and, to crown it all, the Sidmouth Bowls Club annual indoor Supper and Presentation Evening.

The Blue Ball Inn was our venue for the evening and some 60 people attended, and what a lovely evening it most certainly was.

The company was first class and a magnificent meal was prepared and served by Pauline and her team.

Our thanks go to those members that helped to organise the evening.

In terms of action away from the wining and dining, the Sidmouth ladies’ Over-50s League teams, the Yellows and the Blues, found themselves meeting each other. That’s because they play in the same division this season and so will meet ‘home’ and ‘away’.

Befitting of a league ‘in-house’ derby meeting, the match was very competitive, but played in a great spirit – this despite the sweltering heat of the afternoon!

The contest was one of ‘nip-and-tuck’ with both sides sporting a winning rink at the conclusion of the match.

For the Blues, the honours went to Janice Quinn, Eileen Hewett and skip Jill Bishop with a score of plus eight while, for the Yellows, Sandra Wheeler, Jill Mison and skip Valerie Newnham enjoyed a score of plus four. As for the final score, that was 33-29 in favour of the Blues, who bank four points to the two that Yellows bank.

Sidmouth men were in Over-60s League action with the B team off to Seaton where they were up against the unbeaten home side.

However, after a hard-fought game, Sidmouth emerged as the 37-26 winners, and so banked seven of the available eight points.

Well done to the men, especially the rink of Roger Stewart, Frank Adlam and skip David Fairclough, who recorded a terrific score of 24-13.

Unfortunately, the A team were beaten on both rinks, but overall only by a small margin, in their meeting with Uffculme A.

There were just two mixed friendly matches played at home during the past week. The first was against our long-standing friends from Lyme Regis, who visited us on a lovely sunny day, but one that was still on the chilly side of things for the time of year.

However, Sidmouth had a very good outcome, being successful on four of the six rinks with the overall score being 120-90 in our favour.

Our best rink was that of Kevin Walsh, Mary Turner, and skip John Mason, with a great score of 26-7.

The second friendly was a four rink meeting with Dawlish Marina. This time Sidmouth won on three of the four rinks and by an overall score of 77-64.

The best Sidmouth rink was again skipped by John Mason who, with the help of Wendy Cox, Gary Hargrave and Ann Capon, secured a 23-12 success. Well done, to you all.
