Last week was very busy on for all concerned, writes Ron Cook.

A large number of members were required to turn out to support the club for two large fixtures.

First up were a mixed team form Carshalton Beeches, Sutton in Surrey which proved a very enjoyable and competitive game.

Sidmouth only won three of the eight games. However, due mainly to a tremendous performance by the lady captain’s team scoring a 32-9 success, the home side were able to land an overall victory at 135-119.

The successful Sidmouth rinks were: Chas Coates, Doreen Pound, Bert Hague and skip Val Newnham (32-9); Mary Bristow, Harry Carpenter, Zena Johnson and skip Ray Tallent (21-17) and Jean Brimson, Ralph Brooks, Josephine Harrison and skip Frank Adlam (20-8).

The following day we had a nine rink triples match against visiting Eastleigh Railway BC from Hampshire. Sidmouth won six, drew one and last on two rinks and secured an overall 139-126 victory.

The victorious Sidmouth teams were: Maurie Ervine, Mike Bolland and Ray Tallent (19-14), Geof Hargrave, Pat Pritchard and Frank Adlam (12-9); Brenda Somerfield, Jason Quinn and John Mason (20-14); Lynda Hargrave, Ralph Brooks and Jane Painter (18-11); Ann Elwood, Ken Day and Jill Bishop (23-7); Doreen Pound, Margaret King and Val Newnham (12-11) and John Greenaway, Alex Bent and Eileen Hewett (14-14).

On Thursday the men’s section held their annual Captain’s Day with the past captain Ivan Robins challenging the future captain John Greenaway.

It was the Robins team that was acclaimed winners with a score line of 107-58.

Team scores were: Harry Carpenter, Gordon Blood and skip Ron Cook (22-9); Ken Bridgman, Ken Day and skip Chas Coates (21-14); Dennis Moore, George Hudec and Brian Smith (26-9).

Prior to the match members took part in a Spider which raised funds for the clubs nominated charity MND support group.

Last, but certainly not least this week, congratulations to our Exeter Over-60s B team on gaining promotion to Division Two.

With one game to play they could yet win the league depending on the outcome of Morchard Bishops final game.

The A squad are safe and will play in Division One again next year as they cannot be overtaken in their last game, which sees them take on Culm Vale.
