Dave Welsh is well known in the town of Sidmouth and surrounding area, writes Dennis Elliott.

He is a parent governor of Sidmouth College and, as a member of Sidmouth Running Club, Sid Vale Cycle Club and the N1 Tri club, is no stranger to the many local athletic events available, on almost every weekend of the year, that showcase the stunning natural beauty of our area.

This year, 2013, Dave decided to make a special year as he was lucky enough to take a year off from formal work and get really fit. As he was to celebrate his 53rd birthday during the year he decided to set himself the target of completing 53 sporting events and races to ensure his challenge was a real one.

The Bicton Blister, The Grizzly, The Exe to Axe, The Exmoor Beast, The Mad March Audax, Bristol and Orchadleigh triathlons the list goes on and on. He raced with his father and son in the same event. He paced his Dad in a half marathon and at a later date set a PB himself for the distance and also for 1500m swimming.

He overcame adversity in the form of a broken rib and several other injuries. He rode over Exmoor for 40 miles with a broken saddle frequently battled harsh weather conditions but he never gave in. In addition he found the time to put something back as he masterminded a duathlon event at the West Point arena in Exeter.

Reflecting on his year Dave is keen to point out the local natural beauty of course. However, he is most keen to recognise just how much work and effort is put in by so many people to stage the various events that showcase our area.

Many of these events raise huge sums of money for local charities and as a result do so much for people who are not able to compete themselves.

The motto of Dave’s tri club is ‘be the best you can be’. In 2013 Dave was just that.

Maybe in 2014 you might like to set your self a target and get involved and challenge your self too.

You will not be disappointed. Dave Welsh we salute you!
