SIDMOUTH 2nd XI travelled to Plympton to collect a win in double quick time, collecting 20 points in the process and keeping up the pressure on Exeter who head the 2nd XI Premier league, writes Fionn Wardrop.

Following a week that was far from flaming June the match start was delayed until 2.45pm and it was a credit to Plympton that the game began as early as it did.

Matt Hewer won the toss and had no hesitation in inserting Plympton who were immediately on the back foot as Nick Mansfield found his range.

Several balls were played and missed before Mansfield found opener Ryan Skinner’s edge and Robbie Powell took a great catch. Powell followed up with another catch from the same bowler as Dan Hussey suffered a first-baller.

Charlie Dibble was again into the action early at the other end and continued his fine form, removing three of Plympton’s top seven on his way to figures of 3-12 from eight overs.

Mansfield was replaced by Sidmouth’s second spinner, Dom Bess, who outshone even Dibble and collected 4-10 from 7.2 overs to send Plympton plummeting to 55 all out.

Bess was unlucky not to take five wickets as Plympton’s last man was dropped by Mansfield, who promptly picked the ball up and ran him out.

Sidmouth’s innings was over and done with before tea as, despite the early loss of Saj Patidar, Hewer and Will Sobczak sailed to the victory target of 55 in 11.3 overs.

Hewer’s good form continued as he ended unbeaten on 37 and Sobczak finished not out on 19.

The game lasted fewer than 40 overs in its entirety.

A tougher game can be expected tomorrow when Cornwood visit The Fort Field and several players will need practice before then, having had little to do in the past couple of weeks.
