Sidmouth Golf Club Emerton Court team visited Churston Golf Club for the final of this year’s competition against a strong Tiverton team.
The Emerton Court team is made up from the over 60’s men of Sidmouth Golf Club. It is the premier competition for Club senior golfers and has been won twice by Sidmouth, in 1989 and 1995.
This year, the team have beaten Dartmouth, Sidmouth, Dainton Park, Exeter and Ilfracombe. Tiverton arrived at the Final after winning at Libbaton and other notable away performances, so Sidmouth knew they were up against it.
First off for Sidmouth was John Barnard, Sidmouth’s Emerton Court Captain, playing with his long-standing golfing partner, Lester Willmington. The first hole at Churston is a long par 3, two hundred yards plus and into the wind. One of the Tiverton players teed off, made the edge of the green and sunk the putt for Tiverton to go one up.
However, John and Lester were not fazed by this and promptly won the next five holes to go four up and maintained the lead through the match to win on the fifteenth, 4 and 3. Bob Jonston and Graham Rogers were next up and in a very tight game, lost on the 18th.
The third Sidmouth team featured Bob Webber and Pat McCormack, and they won on the seventeenth, following a great tee shot and putt by Bob. To win outright, Sidmouth needed three points and now had two in the bag.
Colin Macklin and Trevor Kerridge were two down after 13 holes. However, they won the next two holes and then on the 16th, Trevor played a magnificent shot from a deep bunker and holed the putt to win the hole. On the 17th, Colin faded a long tee shot to the edge of the green, rolled the putt down next to the hole to win the match and seal the overall win for Sidmouth.
The presentations were made in the clubhouse along with many fine speeches. John paid tribute to his Sidmouth team for their support over the year and managing to finish the campaign with the best away performance of the season. Another famous day to add to Sidmouth Golf Club’s long and illustrious history.
